Match the boat to the water—not just the dream. For rivers and the Great Loop, prioritize dependable propulsion, shallow draft, bridge clearance, protected steering, safe side decks, ventilation, and serviceable systems. A boat you can maintain underway is often a better cruiser than a larger boat packed with complicated equipment.

Trailerable cruiser: flexible and economical, with easy access to new cruising grounds.

Before purchase, inspect the hull, transom, stringers, deck core, through-hulls, steering, fuel system, wiring, batteries, engine, transmission or outdrive, cooling system, bilge pumps, sanitation system, and trailer. Look for soft decks, stained headliners, cracked tabbing, fuel odor, overheated wiring, corroded terminals, milky oil, damaged bellows, neglected anodes, and incomplete paperwork. A professional marine survey and mechanical inspection are strongly recommended before committing.

Start with gallons aboard, realistic gallons per hour, and speed through the water. Range in nautical miles = usable gallons ÷ gallons per hour × knots. Never plan to consume the entire tank. Hold back at least 20% for current, wind, detours, closed fuel docks, contaminated fuel, and emergencies. An 80-gallon gasoline supply with a 20% reserve leaves 64 usable gallons. At 2–3 GPH and 5–6 knots, theoretical planning range is roughly 107–192 nautical miles; use the conservative end until real-world fuel-burn logs prove otherwise.

Plan every leg around fuel, locks, bridge clearance, current, weather, daylight, and a safe alternate stop. Confirm Notices to Mariners and lock restrictions before departure. On long river legs, mark marinas, municipal docks, anchorages, emergency ramps, and bailout points. Carry paper or offline backup charts, allow extra time after storms, and never assume a marina has fuel simply because an older guide lists it.

A practical helm combines chartplotting, GPS, depth, VHF radio with DSC, AIS reception or transponder, and reliable power. Radar adds valuable awareness in fog, rain, and darkness but does not replace a lookout. A Raspberry Pi 5 running OpenCPN, Signal K, Node-RED, and compatible charts can provide an expandable second navigation station. Keep critical navigation functions usable if the network, display, or primary computer fails.

Build around documented loads and daily amp-hour use. Protect every positive conductor near its source, size cable for current and voltage drop, use marine-grade tinned copper, support wiring, label both ends, and separate AC and DC systems. Solar reduces generator time but production varies with shading and season. Battery chemistry, charging profile, alternator protection, ventilation, overcurrent protection, and disconnects must work as one coordinated system.

Choose anchor gear for the boat’s displacement, windage, bottom type, and expected conditions—not only boat length. Carry adequate chain and rode, secure the bitter end, and verify the anchor is set. Use a snubber where appropriate. Practice slow-speed handling before entering crowded marinas. In locks, prepare lines and fenders early, follow the lockmaster’s instructions, keep hands and dogs clear of pinch points, and never permanently tie the boat to a floating or fixed lock fitting unless directed.

Create a log for hours, fuel, oil, coolant, belts, filters, impellers, ignition parts, anodes, bellows, batteries, and observed leaks. Before every departure check engine oil, coolant, bilge, fuel odor, belt condition, steering, cooling-water flow, battery voltage, and controls. Carry model-specific spares and the tools needed to install them. For gasoline inboards, operate the bilge blower before starting and after refueling, and investigate any fuel smell immediately.
